NATIONAL FILM TOUR

Have you Heard From Johannesburg:From Selma to Soweto

The Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions Working Group (BDS Working Group), a part of the academic boycott campaign currently underway at the University of Johannesburg (www.ujpetition.com) will be coordinating a national film tour in conjunction with the Tri-continental Film Festival and campuses across the country.

From Selma to Soweto, is part five of the seven part series: Have you Heard From Johannesburg. This is an excellent movie about boycotts against apartheid South Africa that resonate very clearly with the growing boycott of Israel.   The film deals with the boycotts that took places at campuses during the struggle to end South African apartheid. There will be a pamphlet with some FAQs (that have come up regarding the boycott of Israel: it's not feasible, you end up hurting the oppressed, we should be involved in constructive engagement etc.). The movie, by using the South African struggle as a case example, answers many of these questions; it rubbishes many of the arguments that anti-boycotters raise.

Seminar: The Role of Youth and Students in the Struggle of Apartheid

Human Sciences Building (HSB) floor 19-15

10h00

Speakers: Steve Faulkner (Coalition for a Free Palestine)  and SASCO Provincial Chair

Steve Faulkner is a long time activist and trade unionist. He is currently SAMWU's International and Equality Officer.

The COSATU-led Coalition for a Free Palestine is a multi body organisation comprised of different groups who have an interest in Palestinian solidity. Many of these groups are not Palestine focused organisations, but none the less recognise the injustice caused by the Israeli occupation. The coalition seeks to provide a space for these different organisations to interact and mobilise together. Some of its member organisation include Amnesty International South Africa, The South African Municipal Workers Union and the Palestine Solidarity Alliance.

SASCO is the biggest student movement in Africa. It organises students in institutions of higher learning striving for the transformation of not just institutions of higher learning but the whole system in order to achieve a non-sexist, non-racial, working class biased and democratic education system. It seeks to ensure the destruction of capitalist relations of production and the ushering of a socialist society.
